Wonderful post. I get a lot of curiosity, some admiration, and the occasional negative remark when I’m out with my kids on the bike. The one that really stings, even years later, because of the injustice of it, was the woman who dangerously cut me off with her mini-van to yell at me “How dare you endanger your children with that thing!”

Yup. We’ve gotten our own variation of 1,2,3, and 4 when riding around with the two boys on the back. I’ll gladly tell folks we ordered it online and had it shipped and assembled at our LBS. I also gladly admit that before getting it I hadn’t ridden in over 20 years and, yes, it does take a little getting used to but it isn’t impossible. If I, a moderately overweight middle-aged mom can hack it, I’m sure most people can. The only question I really hate is, “How much did it cost?” I demure by saying it was about the same as what we got for our 10+ year old car we sold when we moved up here and became a 1-car family. It is a car replacement for us and we are fortunate to have it. But if you want to know the price, Google it.

I have uploaded a photo of a post office delivery girl in Berlin, Germany. It seems that all mail was delivered via these bikes. Note the little wheel near the front of the bike. It is one of a pair that served as a sturdy kickstand, yet easily folded up so the delivery rider wasted no time mounting and dismounting.

I have found that ever since I got my Xtracycle my car use has dropped dramatically, My 1997 SaturnSL1 gets 45 on the highway and I refuel every 5 or six weeks.
