I was just in DC too! And was commuting from Arlington to Capitol Hill (about 10 mi) every day for 4 days. After being on lonely backroads lacking shoulders for the ride up from Richmond, the Custis trail was luxurious! Plenty of company with other bikers, joggers and walkers, though - as you say - that can be dangerous and/or inconvenient. And LOTS of tourists. I even took a bit of footage of my ride: http://www.bit.ly/c7rC3A

Be well! Ride safe!
